How CompressIt Works

CompressIt reduces PDF file sizes directly inside your web browser. Your PDF stays on your device throughout the entire compression process.

Unlike many online PDF compressors, CompressIt does not upload your document to an external server. The compression process runs locally using JavaScript in your browser.

What happens when you compress a PDF?

When you select a PDF, CompressIt reads the document locally, processes its pages and creates a smaller version for you to download. The resulting PDF is generated on your own device rather than being sent away for processing.

This approach can dramatically reduce the size of image-heavy PDFs such as brochures, scanned documents, presentations and visual reports.

Why browser-based PDF compression matters

Which PDFs work best?

CompressIt is particularly useful for PDFs containing large images, photographs, scans, presentations and other visual content. These types of documents often contain far more image data than is necessary for normal viewing, email or online sharing.

The amount of compression will vary from one document to another. A large image-heavy PDF may shrink dramatically, while an already optimised document may show a smaller reduction.

Does PDF compression affect quality?

Compression reduces file size by rebuilding and optimising the pages of your document. Some visual quality may therefore be reduced, particularly when a very large PDF is compressed substantially.

Always keep your original PDF and check the compressed version before submitting, printing or distributing it.

What happens to links and selectable text?

CompressIt currently rebuilds PDF pages as images. This means features such as selectable text, hyperlinks, forms, bookmarks and accessibility tags may not be preserved in the compressed version.

For brochures, scans, presentations and other primarily visual PDFs, this trade-off can produce very substantial reductions in file size.

Is there a maximum PDF file size?

Because CompressIt runs inside your browser, the practical file size limit depends mainly on your device's available memory and browser capabilities rather than an upload limit imposed by CompressIt.

Is CompressIt free?

Yes. CompressIt is free to use and does not require an account, registration or subscription.

Privacy

Since your PDF is processed locally in your browser, CompressIt cannot access, view, store or recover the documents you compress.
